So… I decided to start blogging again. For the families of all those who held their breath, I’m very sorry.
So, to catch-up where we left off: I know lots everything about houses and I have better taste than anyone. (present company excepted, of course)
What I don’t have (and this also frustrates me) is enough money to actually do all the things I can dream up.
But I can write about it and show pictures!
For example… check out this picture above.
Easy Sunroom Addition
Here’s what you might want to notice in this picture:
1. You can build this sofa/couch/sectional thingy. (or have your carpenter build it) The legs on this are nothing more than plywood. Any decent carpenter and every cabinetmaker in the world knows how to do this. Cushions… harder but not impossible.
Bottom line, you can create this awesome look for hundreds, not thousands.
2. Large slate floor tiles. Here’s the secret: REALLY flat concrete slab. But the cool thing is that it’s really easy to get a super flat slab on a room this size because it’s narrow enough to use a long 2×4 or piece of aluminum to “screed” the concrete. Once the slab is flat, the floor can be done easy as pie.
3. Simple structure and roof. I’m talking roof, not ceiling, though the ceiling is easy too. I’m talking about the shape of the structure. Here’s a sketch:
You can add a little room like this right on to the side of your house for less money than you might think! It’s even possible for a highly ambitious DIY’er.
It’s a great way to get a little space for an office, studio, or just a place to escape and enjoy a nice view.

Glad to be back! 🙂 Do I still have any readers?
Welcome back. I am still here. looking forward to what you can teach me.
Glad you are back. I have this size room plans to add to my kitchen..but contract bids say $100 sq ft unfinished. How can I do the slab (just a little plumbing) and framing for less? I’m not scared of hard work.
@Debbie, Cost depends on a number of factors such as where you live, what type of construction your house is (expensive roofing, windows, etc.), and the size of the addition. I’ve priced jobs before where I was willing to build 400sf for the same price as I would do 200sf for. The cost for your builder to mobilize forces can really increase the $ per sf on smaller jobs. You can sometimes avoid this by sub-contracting work yourself, but that requires a big time commitment and taking on some risk.
Yep, still here! I would love to do an addition but I really want it done by a professional so I will wait for a while.
Yes, yes, still have readers. Don’t worry – we all don’t have enough money to do the things we want. Nice to see you back. I hate it when your site is not accessable as you have some great things here to refer back to, even if you don’t post regularly.
Glad you guys are still with me!
