You should thank me. Really. I’ve just spared you so much pain. If not for my selfless act, you would be closer than you realize to pure misery. My act? I hit delete. Well, first I highlighted my whole post, then I hit delete.
It was really bad. Make you want to grab a rock and jump in the pool, it would.
Short version:
So called “Aging-in-Place” or Universal Design ideas are still holding strong. Good investment, if done right. They have a designation for contractors called CAPS, Certified Aging In-Place Specialist. (makes me think of a tree…I’d much prefer to age with my behind on the move!)
There are some cool ideas…
-
Raised washer and dryer
-
Mid-level located ovens in the kitchen
-
Separate cooktops rather than a standard range
These can be incorporated without changing the look and feel of your design in any way.
Some of the other things you can do that are helpful, but might have an impact on your design…
- Install Grab Bars in the bathroom
- Put in a curbless shower for wheelchair access
- Make all the doors wider
The thought I was seeking to express in a non-lethal way, was that it makes sense to really think through who the potential users of your remodeling project might be and design with that in mind.
Just something to think about. Hold the applause…
Great ideas. I love that laundry room, what a dream, the kitchen is wonderful too. Thanks for the info. Hugs, Marty
I want that laundry room!!
Great thoughts. Being of that “certain age”, these are things that my handyman (DH) and I have thought about as we go through the remodeling process. I love the raised washer and dryer idea. I can have the front loaders I want and build a platform to put them on rather than buying the way overpriced things they sell to go with them! We’ve put in pocket doors and made them wide enough for wheelchair access where we could. My handyman built us a walk in shower with no door and a corner seat, 2 shower heads with a hand held spray attachment on one and when we replaced the toilet, we put in one that is taller. My broken hip at age 48 really prompted us to think through some of these things.
