White Marble is showing up more and more. Take a look at this picture that Melissa posted at The Inspired Room a couple of days ago…
Nice kitchen! You want a Remodeling Guy perspective? Ready or not, here it comes…
-
White Marble Counters – They look great, but you really have to be careful because marble is much more susceptible to damage than granite. This is especially true about damages from harsh cleaning chemicals. But, like I said, the look is great.
-
2 Centimeter Thick Edge– I’ve always been a fan of 2cm stone. I just like the look better in most material than the 3cm. I especially think it looks better around the undermount sinks.
-
Don’t try this at home – See how the sinks are back-to-back? Most stone fabricators would squeal like a stuck pig if you asked them to cut two sink undermounts and drill eight faucet holes in the center of that slab. It makes it much more likely to break during installation and/or crack down the road.
-
Cabinet Details – How much you wanna bet this island is new and the wall cabinets are old? That’s the only reason I can figure that they would use inset cabinet doors on the wall (see how the cabinet door and the face of the cabinet are on the same plane) and a “full-overlay” or European style cabinet on the island (notice how you don’t see any cabinet frame). No big deal other than to show that you can mix things up an it works out fine.
-
Ceiling Crown – See how simple that crown treatment is on the ceiling? My grandma can install that crown. She’s pretty handy I admit, but I’m just saying it’s not too hard for a relative novice. 🙂 They may have chosen that system (which looks like a 1×6 with a little bit of edge detail added on the ceiling and a shorter version of the same thing on the wall) because the height of the windows prevented regular crown from working. Or just because it looks great, which I think it does.
-
Cool Light Fixtures
-
Neat Windows – getting them that close in the corner requires some structural forethought and design.
-
Love the shades – Anything made out of bamboo or a derivative works for me.
-
Our cabinets look just like that on the inside – NOT…glass doors might not work in our kitchen!
-
What would we do without a pot filler? – The first time a client asked for one the change order with the fixture was about $750.00. I actually did the math showing him the hourly wage he was paying to keep from walking the three feet to the sink with the pot of water. I was trying to talk him out of it! No luck and they just kept coming. You can’t fight progress.
What more can I say?

I love your “Remodeling Guy” analysis, this was fun. I was laughing that you noticed the inset/overlay doors and decided it was because the wall cabinets were old and the island was new. That is exactly why my cabinet doors were different and my island had inset doors. 🙂 You are so smart.
Now, I LOVE glass cabinets and YES YOU COULD DO IT. You can use them on your dish or glassware cabinets so you don’t have to worry about showing off your metamucil or gas x or whatever. Not that YOU would have those, or that we should be ashamed of them if we did, but they are just not really pretty (or appetizing for the kitchen).
Great post and we can tag team our inspiration photos any time. 🙂

I’m glad you approve Melissa! I was a little worried you’d have the blog gestapo after me for snagging your picture! That’s funny about the cabinet doors. I hope you thought the actual JOKES were funny too. You did see the jokes right. I think there were two, should I list them here?
Anyway, I’ll leave the Gas-X thing alone… Is that the stuff you pour into the tank on your motorboat to make it run better?
Thanks for the comment… Tim
I have a crush on pot fillers!

I love reading your honest analysis of this beautiful kitchen. I too think white marble is lovely but I need a kitchen that can take a beating so I know that marble would never be a good choice for me.

I love how you dissected that. How many sinks/pot fillers does on small kitchen need?? Eek

You “could” mention the beautiful blue tile backsplash! I’m in love with the color right now! Not that I have anything to paint/install/change right now (in my rental house), but one of these days …
One question – what color white is in this picture? I go to the paint store and there are a hundred different whites – how to choose?

LOVE this! Do it every week, PLEASE?
Ok, in almost all kitchens in every magazine they show inset cabinets orwhateverthatisyoucalled it. I have always assumed that’s just a fancy way to show off that you can spend the big bucks on custom cabs?
Pot filler? you are a genius. Like the anti contractor figuring out what everything cost and showing the hourly rate to the client! LOVE IT!
Can I pick the photo next time?

Oh and white marble, I’ve heard tell that laying a cigarette on it {unlight :} or spilling grape juice/wine can stain it too–is it that finicky?

Hi, Tim, thanks for stopping by! As usual, I’m way behind on blog reading, I just cannot keep up with them all. Glad you enjoyed the burlap roundup. it was a fun party!
And this is a beautiful kitchen. I hear you on the marble, I would not want something that hard to take care of. I just got granite installed & love it. And I don’t understand the big deal about those pot fillers either. Just put it under the sink! 🙂

MAN! My grandma just crocheted us slippers!
“Pot filler”…will wonders never cease! Where have I been to never have heard of such a thing!
Great info & commentary.

I don’t care for the white marble….not enough warmth and to much work!
I started noticing the pot fillers a couple years ago at Parade of Homes in Northern Utah. I guess it takes more energy to walk a couple steps to the sink than I realize! ? Each to his own though 🙂
I like the look of a couple open shelves in the kitchen to display some of your favorite dishes.
Thanks for sharing! It’s always fun to see what others notice and see their perspective 🙂

Good morning Tim 🙂
This post made me laugh! I agree with you on the pot filler. It looks cool, but in reality I’m a spiller and I use a gas stove… somehow I don’t think it would bode well for me LOL Besides, why can’t they walk three feet?
As far as the marble, I can see a small area of it used for a baking station to roll out cookies and pie crusts, but most of the time, I think ….that person doesn’t cook and it’s a show kitchen. How do you feel about butcher block counters?

Dear Remodeling Guy,
I’m a big fan. Found you through the Nester. I’ve read your posts on painting cabs and the various options you presented. I have a beautiful Thomasville hutch I bought nearly 2 years ago at a thrift store for $150. I think it’s oak. I had ambitious plans to paint it black. But in my garage it still sits.
I’m planning to get on it this summer. I don’t have a professional sprayer but I want it to look as professional as possible. It’s a pretty large hutch with glass doors on top. Do you think I could spray paint the whole thing using the method you used for the single cabinet door? If so, should I use a spray primer as well? I’ve spray-painted many a piece of furniture but never something so large…which is why I’m a bit wary.
Thanks for your time and expertise!

Hi Scooper,
Thanks for your question. In fact, thanks to all of you for your questions. I’m getting quite a few today on a few different posts. If I could ask one favor… please post all questions in the Forums. You can use the navigation bar at the top of the page, just click where it says “Forums”. I’m answering all questions there. I usually get to them within 24 hours.
Much obliged!
Tim
I love the glass doors and the blue tiles.
