Are you looking to spruce up your bathroom? Personally, I think it’s one of the best places to start remodeling. Let’s see how many ideas we can get from one picture! Here is the picture:
Nice Huh?
Well, I say you don’t have to do ALL of this to rock your bathroom into a new realm of spa-at-home bliss! Just start small and do one thing at a time.
Try these in no particular order:
1.
Frame the mirror!
You can either buy a framed mirror and hang it up, or you can frame the mirror you already have! Everybody is all into black right now, right? How about this: just make the mirror frame black. It works in this picture, maybe it can work for you!
2.
Get new light fixtures!
This makes a huge, ginormous difference with very little effort. You can watch a hundred videos online on how to do this and then you can totally DO-IT-YOURSELF!
3.
Get some new hardware!
Not only is this easy, but shopping for bath hardware is, like, totally fun.
4.
Paint!
I don’t think a single remodeling project can compete with paint for the proverbial “bang for your buck”. So paint! I really like a marked contrast between the trim and the walls, even if the colors remain soft, like this.
5.
Install Some Bead-Board!
Paint and fixtures not enough? Want to get into some woodwork? Then we think alike, you and I. I’m totally into the woodwork in this bathroom! How about doing some wainscot paneling like this picture shows! or…
6.
Trim the door!
How hot is this door trim? This job has all the bells and whistles. At the base of the casing you can see the “plinth blocks”. And the top of this doorway is done beautifully! I say copy it exactly! and then…
7.
Install some crown!
One of the most common things I’ve heard over the years of construction, even after doing hundreds of thousands of dollars in work, are:
“I can’t belive what a difference the crown molding made.”
8.
Tile the floor!
This picture shows about as simple of a tile project as you can find. But look at it… it looks great! Tile is as much about color and texture as it is about material, feel, and pattern. Sometimes you can get a great look with sale pile, El Cheapo, tile. Go for it!
9.
Get a Rockin’ Vanity!
Many people would be totally shocked at how inexpensively things like this can be found online! I’ve seen vanities just like this one with the stone top and all for $500.00 or so. I often wonder how they do it! One thing is for sure, this looks great. Especially in this particular bath!
But if you can only do one thing…
10.
Get a new faucet!
It’s simple, it’s cheap, it’s effective, it’s REMODELING!!!
And it is certainly a start!
When you do this, make sure you take pictures, write a post, and bring your post back here on May 1st for the Remodeling Guy Round-Up!
If you’re interested in these projects, you should use that internal search box up at the top of the first sidebar, just to the left of the little green guy with the bullhorn! There is much more here about most of these projects.
I sure hope you go for it! The bathroom is the first place most people go in the morning 🙂 It should be a nice place to go, don’t you think?
You and your bathroom puns! I suppose you just can’t hold it in … ha ha ha ha! 😉
Ok, seriously, wow.
First I saw the lighting!
And the trim and bead board!!
And OHMYGOODNESS THAT VANITY! How cool is that??!
(Btw, I am sad you picked May 1 because we don’t close until a couple weeks after that so they’d probably appreciate us waiting to start remodeling until then …)

I really want a “furniture” like vanity (like this one) for my master bath. I wouldn’t dream you could buy something like that for $500.

Ok, now I know what my new bathroom will look like!! Thanks for the picture so I can show my contractor~
Great post. The contractor is hired (this is beyond us), and the bathroom remodel begins soon followed by the new bathroom addition!!! Yahoo…two baths for 7 going on 9 people in the family! So excited, but stuck on paint colors. It needs to help me hide a little dirt since these rooms will be well used and I only like to clean a couple times a week. Any suggestions??? Thanks!
Wonderful post!! Starting small…that is what I am doing. 🙂

Did you just say “Like totally fun!”? Just checking…lol.
Thanks for the great ideas. Maybe I’ll actually have my bathroom finished my May 1st! If I do I’ll post in on the Round Up.

I actually made frames for two of my bathroom mirrors and then didn’t know how to “install” them!!! They are just made of inexpensive molding, but they won’t lay flat against the mirrors because of those stupid cheap clippy things that the builders use to hang the mirrors. The frames have been sitting in my garage for two years (actually, come to think of it they may have been sent to the dump on the last trip. 🙁 )

ok…perfect timing! I am getting started on the Master bath. Paint mainly. Start small and go from there piece by piece. I would love to take down that huge ginormous wall mirror. I’ll have to research that one to see cost/time involved. 🙂 Thanks for the tips!

Great ideas!
Actually, I would LOVE to redo our bath right now, but we don’t really have the money. Although, I have been thinking of painting over the hideous outdated wallpaper just to make it look different!!! And, before you suggest taking it off, it’s pretty stuck on there, and I don’t really want to replace chunks of drywall!! 😉 I’ve already checked!

I’ve managed to convince my husband to let me frame the mirrors in our bathroom. Woo hoo!

I reallllllly want new tile—especially in my kitchen! But I have never done tiling before. No one around me has either, so I don’t have anyone to learn from yet. I am not the most handy person either, so taking it on, all by myself, seems a bit intimidating. i got tile pricing from 3 people, and WOW, it can get expensive, even for SIMPLE tile!!!
if anyone has any insight as to how to adhere moulding as a frame on a huge “construction grade” mirror (held up with plastic clips), please do so, i love the idea.
Thanks for all the great comments! I have a minute to respond to a couple now… I’ll get to any other questions by email.
I do try to answer all questions but if I ever miss one, just email me at tim@remodelingguy.net
Shilo – A straight tile job is really not too tough. You should try it if you want to. The hardest part is cutting the tile, but they sell some inexpensive wet saws that work great. When I get done with this comment, I’ll add a good wet-saw for homeowner use to the “General Store”… it’s a new link in the first sidebar, near the top.
I would just suggest that you look in my categories under “Mr. How-To” and go to that post…there you’ll find links to a number of websites that have tons of How-To’s and you’ll find plenty on tile. You can totally do it!
Jamie – Sticking to the glass is possible. If your mirror goes from wall to wall and there is no room around it, then that may be the way to go. If you send me pictures of the mirror, I’ll tell you what method I would go with and explain it a little further.
As for sticking to the mirror… I would probably play with a couple of options. Good quality double sided adhesive tape comes to mind. You could probably stick it on the mirror, then cut your trim to fit, then peel the other side and stick your trim on. I’ve never done it, but with the right tape, I bet it would work. Another option is an adhesive applied with a caulk gun, such as silicone or liquid nails. Getting adhesives like that to stick to glass can be tricky, but there are those that will do it. Some unkown source of information in the back of my mind is telling me silicone is best for this. But I’m not certain… send me those pictures and we’ll see what ideas come to mind.
