“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” – Winston Churchill
When we talk about design and remodeling, about making things feel better, prettier, more comforting, are we just trying to please ourselves? Is there any real good in it?
Personally, I believe that “remodeling” can change the world. Does that sound crazy to you? I don’t think it is.
Environment Affects Attitude
It’s no secret that color affects mood. We all know the difference that something as simple as cleaning our desk makes. Everyone knows that being in a well designed (either by us or by God) space makes us feel alive and inspired.
So doesn’t it stand to reason that the little changes in our homes will affect our attitude? Is it so much of a stretch to think that this attitude shift could change our world a little? What if we all did it?
Maybe the bailout should be free paint and brushes for everyone to repaint the house!
Just a thought. (and a reminder to me that I need to paint my house!)
The bailout proposal you are writing about would save a lot of money!
And I agree that changing your environment does bring change to your attitude. If you work hard to create it, you are going to want to keep it nice looking. You are going to care what goes in it, comes out of it, and surrounds it. Much like raising children 🙂
Here’s to changing the world in small ways! 🙂

Not a crazy thought at all Tim! What we surround ourselves with, whether it’s the people we choose to spend time with or how we develop our home environments, matters very much!! Even small, positive changes can have a big impact.
Thanks for the reminder!

I’ll take the free paint! And I’ll paint my bathroom light blue with white trim – like the one from coastalliving.com that shows up on the top right of your blog! A friend of mine has a bathroom that isn’t fancy, but uses that basic idea and I LOVE to use it whenever I’m at her house.

Great idea, I’m with ya! 🙂 Our home environment has a definite impact on the family and on others who visit our home as well!

Yes, free paint would be wonderful- but I’ve heard that with the amount of money in the bail- out 90% all the home mortgages could be paid off- now that would be great.
Great advise, I think I need to do a few changes around my place.
Thanks

Wow. you just made me feel a whole lot better about all the work i want to do around the house. Which brings me to my first question….this may be a long shot but I’m hoping you may know the answer so i don’t have to sift through endless pages of government documents. I want to take out the cupboards above my stove – it’s in an island and in taking out the cupboards I would also take out the hood vent (whatever you call it). I don’t want to put another one in because the goal is to open up space and also the cost of one of those fancy ones that hang from the ceiling is over my budget. Is it against building codes not to have a hood over your range?
Hi Angela,
Building codes are different everywhere, so you might find it easiest to just call the local building department and ask your question.
That said, in my area (and I think all of Florida) a range hood is not a requirement in a residential single family dwelling. There are codes that dictate how close to the surface of the cooktop any combustible material may be (cabinets, shelving, etc). The standard spacing between upper cabinets and countertop is about 18″. Many jobs include a hood that is not ducted to the outside.
It is not uncommon at all, in my experience, to have a cooking appliance in an island with no hood at all. I’ve had some jobs where we installed an exhaust fan in the ceiling to help vent out smoke. That was unobtrusive, less costly, and effective.
Remodeling can change the world. And if not the whole world, at least your own world. And sometimes that is the best place to start.

Maybe you should run for Congress!!
I love how something as simple as changing the color of a wall can change your attitude and the overall feel of a room. Great bailout plan!

How timely, here in Canada our government just introduced a tax savings incentive thing-y. It is for 15% tax credit on home renovations over $1000, including PAINT!
That settles it ..I’m moving to Canada! With the amount of paint & remodeling I won’t owe any taxes…Thanks Elizabeth! Oh..and Remodeling Guy I’d vote for you

I AGREE!! As a mom of 6, I can say that painting is the ONLY thing I can do that stays done for any length of time. It’s incredibly fulfilling to keep walking by a new painted room and think, “It’s still painted… It looks clean, I love that space!” Keeping our homes clean, and improving them takes good hard work (all of which makes us feel better about ourselves and how we spend our time) and it makes our home a place where we feel happy to land each day. Keep up the propaganda! I’d rather have paint and brushes than renovated ATV trails any day!
