Mr. How-To, I’m not. I wish I could just snap my fingers and I’d have a perfectly done video or pictorial showing exactly how to do all the things I suggest and talk about. But since I can’t, the only way for me to get that out there for you is to produce it. I would rather write about the things that really inspire!
I’m Your Guy
If you want great advice on bigger scope issues. Such as:
-
Should I hire an architect?
-
Should I hire a contractor?
-
If I should, how do I do it?
-
If I shouldn’t, what do I do?
-
Can I add on to my house?
-
How do I make it look like it was “always there”?
-
How can I improve my use of space?
That list could go down to the floor.
Or maybe, if you want some inspiration and creative energy. Things like:
-
awesome pictures and comments about why they’re awesome
-
advice on how that picture can be done in your house
-
great and innovative new products and methods
-
creative ideas for anything and everything, indoors and out
That list could go through the floor!

Well, since no one else has commented yet, I’ll ask a detailed question. First some background info – 2 years ago, my mom, dad and I installed prefinished, glue down mannington plank flooring in 2 rooms. We did it all from the cutting to installing the shoe moulding. With that said, we are purchasing a new home that has 21/4″ oak flooring that is nailed down. We want to extend that flooring (which is currently in the hallway and den only) to the living room, dining room and kitchen which are all connected to the hallway. Is this a project we could tackle? My mom doesn’t seem to think so since it is not the glue down type of flooring. What do you think?

Corey – You would probably be surprised at how much of a nail down floor job you can do yourself. I’m sure there is a video on one of the sites in this post and I encourage you to find it and take a look. Getting the sub floor, underlayment, vapor barrier, and hardwood down is a bit of work, but not incredibly difficult. The sanding and finishing on the other hand is hard to do well, especially the finishing part. That said, it can be done, and most tool rental stores rent everything you need to do it with. In our last home I installed about 1000 sf of hardwood mostly by myself. Then I hired a finisher to come in and sand/finish the floor. The outcome was incredible and I saved about $3,000.00 or so.
Funny post! I guess we all want our Knight in Shining Armor- with the hammer and screwdriver, etc- ready to tackle any home remodeling job! LOL!
I’m looking for inspiration for trim for my house (most of one floor). I’m looking for something that would add that WOW factor but is also do-able by myself and my husband. It’s easy to see lots of incredible photos but it’s hard to translate them- what would that look like in my house? (and how much time would it take and how much would it cost?). Lots of factors to balance out. So…I’m lost and we haven’t done anything.
Astrid’s last blog post..My best curry dish…
Hi Astrid –
Why don’t you email me some pictures so I can look at it with you? Let me know what kind of tools you have and what type of work you feel comfortable with and we’ll see what we can figure out. Tim
Just wondering if you have posted about painting a concrete floor. I have always thought about how my front porch and back patio would look painted. I love wooden porch floors as they have so much character. Nothing wrong with the porch floor, just a little boring. The patio has some spilled paint stains.
Also wondering if the patio floor should be sealed. Each year I pressure wash it and it comes up nicely, but soon the dirt and green discoloring begins to reappear.
Really enjoy all you write!
Kindly, ldh

We are looking at flooring for our home in the hallway and bedrooms. I have hardwood in my kitchen and dining room which is separated from the hallway and bedrooms by the den (no living). The den is paneled so I will be going with carpeting in there BUT my question is this. Which would be better: hardwood or laminate (not the linoleum kind) and also what is the difference in solid and engineered hardwood. I want something that will last and won’t cost me a fortune. Any recommendations?
